Bangladesh and Sylhet in particular is blessed with heavy precipitation levels. Temperatures are,
therefore, usually lower than the rest of the delta. Even with the high precipitation levels,
temperatures often cross the 39-degree mark — it's then that the high relative humidity becomes
a cause of much discomfort.
Traditionally, we have lived in this tropical deltaic plain in low-rise, ground-hugging homes protected by the
cool shades of trees. By maintaining enough spacing between homes, airflow was allowed to circulate freely,
minimizing the discomforts of high humidity. Clothing and furniture also evolved to complement the comfort
needs of this climate.
